A CHEERFUL TEMPER - ALBUM REVIEWS
„A Cheerful Temper" von Robert Babicz tritt als Retter des Tech-House-Genres an. Während sich in Tech-House-Tracks häufig die Qualitäten von Techno und von House gegenseitig ausstreichen, entwickeln hier abstrakte, technoide Sounds dichte emotionale, housige Stimmungen. Die Klänge sind abstrakt und elektronisch, trotzdem entwickeln die Stücke eine Tiefe. Die Grooves sind komplexer als üblich, die Sounds-Figuren raumgreifender. In ihrer Komposition erinnern die Tracks an alte Detroit-Stücke, ihr verhaltener Drive erinnert aber eher an Kompakt-Platten oder an die frühen britischen Reaktionen auf den Detroit-Sound. Die Sounds haben immer eine gewisse plastiline Weichheit, die Grooves wirken wie abgefedert. Für manch einen klingt das Album auf Dauer vielleicht ein wenig gleichförmig: Die Tracks bewegen sich auf einem bestimmten mittleren Spannungslevel, das sie so gut wie nie verlassen. In diesem homogenen, geschlossenen Stimmungsbild liegt aber gerade eine Qualität: ein schönes und aussagekräftiges Album.

Probabilmente i più grandicelli storceranno il naso (o le orecchie ?) ascoltando questo album, diametralmente opposto alle cose che l'autore polacco (ma da anni trapiantato a Colonia) produceva quando impersonava Rob Acid, Dicabor, Acid Warrior, Sontec, Ra-Patera e Pumpgun Pro. Della sua vecchia scia techno acida infatti rimane poco e niente in questo full-lenght edito dalla Systematic di Marc Romboy, tra le prime labels tedesche a stabilire punti di maggior contatto col fenomeno crescente dell'electro-house.
Babicz ne cavalca l'onda ed "A Cheerful Temper" ne rappresenta, forse abbastanza inconsapevolmente, la maturità, lo sganciarsi dalle ritmiche indiavolate della 909 graffiate e lacerate dalle sgroppate di 303 e il parallelo avvicinarsi ad un filone che trae spunto dal minimalismo dei primi anni novanta e che oggi i tedeschi hanno saputo reinterpretare talmente bene da farne diventare un trend in continua ascesa.
Pezzi come "Milo's Groove", "Christal Castle" e "Liquid Titan" non fanno altro che testimoniare questa virata da parte del polacco, ricordato dagli addetti ai lavori come uno dei migliori tecnici del suono in Europa (memorabili le foto del suo studio, immerso tra strumenti hardware, compressori e decine di metri di cavi di alimentazione e connessione).
In "Neoreplicator" si spinge addirittura a lambire le coste di una sorta di deep-house, decisamente inusuale per il Babicz che conoscevamo sino a qualche tempo fa che però così dimostra di non essersi stabilizzato solo ed unicamente in un frangente musicale. Qualche fiammata in più la ritroviamo nei grooves cocenti di "Warsaw" (dedicata alla sua città
, e poi rimane l'electro-house di
"Sin", i microsuoni di "Imperial Star", i glitches
di "Losing Memories", l'austera progressive di
"Tarja's Dream" e la ballata romantica di "Flower
Of Life" scritta insieme ad Alex Gunia.
Junkfood Records e tutte le scorribande acide rimangono ben chiuse nei ricordi, ora è tempo di un nuovo Babicz, meno compulsivo, meno martellante e meno frenetico ma più moderno ed adatto alle situazioni che la scena musicale del 2007 richiede.

ROBERT BABICZ 'A Cheerful Temper' (Systematic) ****
L'allemand est un pilier de la scène club dans son pays et il frappe très fort avec cet album, sorti sur le label de Marc Romboy ! Il nous lâche 12 titres parfaits, aux ambiances soignées, dancefloor et juste grandioses. 'Cristal Castel' pose un kick appuyé, une grosse ligne de basse et des sons de clavier hypnotiques et mélodiques à souhait. Le cumul de ces ingrédients donnent un rendu magique, très dansant et évasif à la fois. Sur 'Flower Of Live', Babicz flirte avec l'ambient et démontre sa maîtrise du son avec guitare et violoncelle dans une rencontre triste et dénuée de rythmique, jusqu'à ce que d'un riff de guitare sèche donne le ton d'une balade pop-électronica magique. 'Imperial Star' nous replonge sur les dancefloors avec un gros son minimal profond et entraînant. Certains tracks sont aussi plus deep-tech et minimaux, à l'image de 'Liquid Titan', 'Losing Memory' et surtout 'Milo's Groove' *, grosse bombe avec ses petites traînes de synthé mélancoliques. Le premier single 'Sin' possède lui aussi cette enveloppe captivante au niveau des synthés. Rien à dire, on tient là un album vraiment excellent, qui risque bien de marquer son époque ! Every now and
again you hear an album and at the end of it you sit
there, stare into space, and let the realistaion take
over you that you have been to heaven and back. Well,
this is one of them. From the first drum to the last
hum, this would have the whole of Bahgdad smiling.
All10 tracks are worthy of a single release on their
own, but if I really have to pick out stand out tracks
they would have to be 'Milo's
Groove', 'Warsaw' and 'Sin'. An incredibly well
produced album that you have to have in your

Acid house/techno
veteran Robert Babicz comes up with the goods for Marc
Romboy's on form Systematic label. This is an unashamed
club trax album that both moves and evokes. It's fair
to say that this music has a frozen, epic feel to it
that could only have been produced in a European
environment but what makes it stand out is Babicz's
experience in production, which gives this collection a
head start in the sound quality department.
There's also a range of moods evident in
the compositions that is rare in this format. The album
is well programmed and the different pieces add and
subtract from one another on a variety of levels. Not
just in keeping up a momentum that alleviates any
boredom, but also in subtly varying the dynamics and
the underlying perspective from track to track.
"Warsaw" jumps out of the mix, and appears three
dimensional compared to "Neoreplicator" which comes
before. "Imperial Star" is an updated version of
Robert's massive club hit from 2005 "Battle Star"
(Punkt), and is more restrained and linear than it's
predecessor.
All in all this is a strong
album that preserves the essence of the dark, sweaty
dancefloor with only a single strobe for company. It's
as sophisticated as club music production gets, and
that's not because of the compositions themselves, all
of which are strong, but due to the care and attention
to detail implicit throughout.

Das Debüt-Album von Robert Babicz ist viel weniger
Acid-lastig als erwartet. Obwohl der natürlich auch
nicht zu kurz kommt wie auf dem Track
“Warsaw“. Sonst gibt's hier aber eine
Mischung aus Techno und ein wenig treibendem
Electro-House. Besonders gefällt es, wenn Babicz
melodisch wird, wie gegen Ende von “A Cheerful
Temper“. Der geshufflete Beat auf “Losing
Memories“ ist das perfekte Gegenstück zu den
wunderschön fluffigen Flächen. Ein breit gefächertes
Album mit Hits, aber definitiv auch so, dass man es von
Anfang bis Ende durchhören kann. Ein wahres
Artist-Album eben.

tedeschi hanno saputo reinterpretare talmente bene da
farne diventare un trend in continua ascesa. Tra ritmi
minimali, evoluzioni deep-house, sensibilità
electro-house, glitches moderni ed un’austera
progressive, il popolare producer polacco raggiunge la
maturità artistica che entra in contrasto con le
scorribande edite un tempo come Rob Acid. Il suo nuovo
ego è meno compulsivo, meno martellante e meno
frenetico ma più moderno ed adatto alle situazioni che
la scena musicale del 2007 richiede.
